Christmas comes just once a year, but in Rovaniemi it’s every day. This is after all, the official residence of Santa Claus. According to legend, Santa Claus’ original home lies in the mysterious Korvatunturi in Finnish Lapland. Since the exact location is a secret only known to a chosen few, it was decided to establish an office in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, in 1985. Rovaniemi received the status of the Official Hometown of Santa Claus in 2010. A family trip to Santa Claus’ Village in Rovaniemi, must be on your list of things to do in Finland, whether you’ve been naughty or nice. This amusement park/real village is a veritable winter wonderland, open all year round easily accessible from any of the Holiday Club resorts in Finland, especially those in the north.
From riding reindeer-drawn sleighs to actually meeting Santa himself, the kids will have plenty to do. You can also visit the Rovaniemi post-office where Santa receives letters from children all over the world. You might think we’re joking, but the pile of letters and drawings with a wish list of gifts, prove otherwise. The mail is also sorted and Santa (with a little help from a dedicated team) replies to as many as he can. Have your kids write him a letter asking for something this Christmas. They can also purchase a ‘Certificate of Niceness’ that is valid for one year, to make sure Santa visits them at Christmas. For the grown-ups, there’s the Snowman World Ice Bar and Restaurant, where everything, except the food and drinks, is made from ice. Wind down your day at Santa Claus’ Village in Rovaniemi with a traditional Lappish meal at the Kotahovi Restaurant before returning home to your Holiday club resort to hang up your stockings.
