Location:

Agra, Uttar Pradesh, on the right bank of the Yamuna River, about 2.5 km northwest of the Taj Mahal.

History of Agra Fort:

The origins of Agra Fort date back to the 11th century, when it was a brick fort known as Badalgarh. However, its transformation into a grand Mughal stronghold began under Emperor Akbar in 1565, who rebuilt it using red sandstone.

Akbar’s successors, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb, added their own touches. Shah Jahan, known for his love of white marble, built several palaces within the fort, including the Khas Mahal and Moti Masjid. Ironically, he was later imprisoned in the fort by his son Aurangzeb, where he spent his final years gazing at the Taj Mahal.

Spanning 94 acres, the fort is surrounded by massive 70-foot-high red sandstone walls, making it both a defensive stronghold and a majestic residence. During British rule, the fort was used as a military garrison, with some structures altered or demolished. Despite these changes, Agra Fort remains one of India’s most significant historical landmarks.

Architecture of Agra Fort:

Agra Fort is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture, blending Persian, Timurid, and Indian styles. The fort has four grand gates, with the Delhi Gate being the most impressive, though tourists enter through the Amar Singh Gate.

Key Architectural Highlights of Red fort of Agra:

  ·         Jahangiri Mahal: Built by Akbar for his queens, this palace showcases a mix of Rajput and Mughal styles.

  ·         Diwan-i-Aam: The Hall of Public Audience, where the emperor addressed the people.

  ·         Diwan-i-Khas: The Hall of Private Audience, where the emperor met foreign dignitaries.

  ·         Moti Masjid: The "Pearl Mosque," built in white marble by Shah Jahan.

  ·         Musamman Burj: The octagonal tower where Shah Jahan was imprisoned, offering a stunning view of the Taj Mahal.

  ·         Sheesh Mahal: A palace adorned with intricate mirror work, reflecting the artistic mastery of the Mughals.

Designed for both defence and luxury, the fort features hidden tunnels, moats, and high bastions, highlighting its strategic significance.
