Created with a purpose to realise the power of human unity in diversity, Auroville or ‘City of the Dawn’ is recognised as the first and only internationally accepted experiment in human unity and sustainable living. Here, universal brotherhood is both lived and practised, with equal ease. Located around 15 kms from Pondicherry and housing almost 50,000 people from around the world, Auroville was founded by a French lady called Mirra Alfassa, a disciple of Sri Aurobindo, and fondly known as “Mother”.

Want to explore your spiritual side and soak in the feeling of brotherhood and serenity? This is the perfect venue. Do understand that Auroville is a place that asks you to ‘feel the place’ rather than ‘watch the place’. So, if you’re looking to bring in a lot of fresh and positive energy into your life, then you must definitely spare a few days to visit this calm and soothing place.

Once here, you must visit the ‘soul of Auroville’ - the Matrimandir or the Golden Dome, which is the biggest draw here. It is made of gold and has a spiritual connection with those who practice yoga. It took 37 years to build, so you can imagine its relevance to the community.

Apart from a meditation session at Matrimandir (for which you need to book in advance), you can allow the shopaholic in you to go berserk! For you’ll find super cute boutiques, full of locally handcrafted clothes, books, jewellery, candles, organic food products, furniture, house items, lamps, essential oils and incense. And then, you can satiate the foodie in you by sampling all the awesome organic cuisine that is available here. There’s so much to do here, we’d recommend taking a cycle or an electric vehicle to roam around the area.
