The Elephant Rehab Centre is situated at Kottur, approximately 41 kms away from the resort at Poovar. It should take you about 1.5 hours to get there. Elephants have always been an integral part of Kerala and it is befitting that the state should boast of a beautiful home for these graceful creatures. Surrounded by dense forest and grasslands, the Elephant Rehab Centre is a neighbour to the Neyyar reservoir. The rehab centre spreads over 56 acres and is enclosed by trenches to keep wild animals at bay.
The elephants are not chained, they are free to roam. This is the biggest highlight of the Elephant Rehab Centre. From giving care to sick elephants, to serving as a retirement home for old elephants, the centre does it all. It also looks after orphaned elephants. The mahouts look after the elephants with a lot of love and dedication. They bathe them, they feed them. These gentle tuskers are fed cooked rice with jaggery. Visitors can help the mahouts or take an elephant ride and make the most of the experience of visiting the Elephant Rehab Centre.
