The Katoch dynasty can trace its lineage back to the era of the Ramayana and Mahabharat. This lesser known line of kings built the Kangra Fort in the 4th century. One of the oldest forts in India and the largest in the Himalayas, Kangra Fort has stood the test of time. Withstanding the onslaught of the Mughals and the British, this Fort has been besieged 50 times throughout its history and yet stands firm. The best way to experience a slice of its rich history is to Trek to Kangra Fort and take in the stunning vistas. If you are a history buff, this needs to be at the very top of your list of things to do in Dharamshala during your stay at a Club Mahindra Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

Kangra gets its name from ‘Kaan’ which means ‘ear’ and ‘garh’ which means fort. Owing to its unique topography that resembles the human ear. The Fort stands atop a mountain with just one road leading to the main gate. After this the Fort has a series of winding gates intended to be a natural defence. A walk through these gates, built of exposed stone and set against the ruggedly beautiful mountains is reminiscent of scenes from The Lord of The Rings or Game of Thrones. Your kids will greatly appreciate a Trek to Kangra Fort which will allow them to live out their cinematic fantasies.

With a museum dedicated to its storied past and walls that hold centuries of stories, Kangra Fort is an iconic destination that must be seen at least once in your lifetime. It may not be as marvellous as the forts of Rajasthan or the palaces of South India, but its beauty lies in its remoteness, surrounded by stunning Himalayan vistas. A Trek to Kangra Fort and take in the Stunning Vistas is like walking in the footsteps of intrepid kings, princes, explorers, and warriors who have been drawn to its beauty and might, over centuries!
