The Kayavarohan Shiva Temple is a must-visit place for devout Lord Shiva worshippers. It is one of the sixty-eight ‘teerthas' (pilgrimage sites) of Lord Shiva mentioned in the Shiva Purana.
It will take you around two hours (covering ~92 km) to reach Kayavarohan, which is close to National Highway 8, from Club Mahindra Netrang.
It is believed that the ‘Shivalinga’ at Kayavarohan Shiva Temple was installed by the great sage Rishi Vishwamitra during the Treta Yuga.
As per Shaivite mythology, Lord Shiva in the Lakulisha manifestation appeared at this place. Lakulisha is considered to be the 28th birth of Shiva. Shiva had come to earth in the form of Lakulisha through Kayavarohan, literally meaning ‘Descent Of The Form’.
Kayavarohan is, therefore, considered the birthplace of Lakulisha, the 2nd-century C.E. Shaivite revivalist, reformer and propounder of the Pashupata doctrine.
The Kayavarohan Shiva Temple houses an underground meditation cave used for seclusion and meditation.
Needless to say, the festival of ‘Maha Shivratri’ is the most famous festival in Kayavarohan.
The Archaeological Survey of India has listed Kayavarohan as a major Indian heritage site and has set up a special museum for the remains found around this site. Numerous Hindu icons, several copper coins, a stone quern, a grand head of Tapasvi, an image of Kartikeya, and an idol of Uma Maheshwara are some of the rare and unmatched archaeological specimen discovered from Kayavarohan.
