Aurora Borealis. No this isn’t the name of a swanky new, ultra-luxurious, high-rise. We’re talking about the Northern Lights, perhaps nature's greatest show that is put on for 200 nights a year in Finland’s frozen Northern Lapland. The majesty and splendour of this spectacle is hard to describe in words, but we’ll try. And don’t even think about leaving this off your list of things to do in Finland, the Northern Lights are enthralling enough to make people apply for Finnish citizenship (true story).
A Northern Lights Adventure has a few key elements - a clear sky, a remote location and an igloo or cottage built just for viewing the Aurora. The last one can be easily arranged by many resorts in Finland, such as Holiday Club resorts. That’s it, you’re all set. Cosy up under a blanket with your family and get ready to have your mind blown by the myriad of colours that light up the night sky. It’s mother nature’s very own neon sign, beckoning you to a bewitching spectacle, the likes of which you’ve never seen before. Laser shows and decorative lighting are cheap imitations that do a great Northern Lights Adventure no justice. The experience is heightened if you manage to catch the Aurora Borealis from the banks of one of Lapland’s lakes, the lights are reflected on the surface, making the experience seem even more surreal.
Should the frozen north be too cold for your liking, you can also catch the experience from the south of Finland which is a bit more temperate. However, your Northern Lights Adventure here will have to be meticulously planned, as the Aurora is visible in the south for only 10-20 days each year. The best time for a Northern Lights Adventure is from September to May. Additionally, you can also sign-up for updates from the Finnish Meteorological Service which monitors the lights closely.
