Whether you’re a fan of medieval architecture or simply love Game of Thrones too much, the 700-year-old Turku Castle and the Turku Cathedral are just the blasts from the past you need to put at the very top of your list of things to do in Finland. Turku Castle is one of the oldest buildings in Scandinavia that is still in use today. These two iconic monuments are your dose of culture when you stay at resorts in Finland such as Holiday Club Caribia.

Turku Castle has served as the Governor's Court, a barrack and even a prison. It is divided into three levels, each signifying a period of its colourful history. The dimly lit ground level displays the castle's origins during the Middle Ages. Its upper floors are adorned with artefacts from the Renaissance period and the top-most level is used for exhibitions. Should this be a dive into the deep end of history for kids, there is also a Children’s Castle, which has The Knight’s Hall, where kids can dress as princesses or knights and walk majestically into a medieval court and the Castle-Elf’s Treasure Chamber, which is a gift shop.

A little distance away is the equally old Turku Cathedral. This earlier Catholic Cathedral is now the Mother Church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. This is a must visit if you’re taking a winter vacation in Finland as it is the epicentre of Finland’s annual Christmas celebration. The sound of its bells chiming at noon is broadcast on national radio and can be heard throughout Turku! It has three grand church organs which are still in operation. When you visit the 700-year old Turku Cathedral, don’t forget to visit the Cathedral Museum located in the South Gallery that chronicles its journey over many centuries.
