India is a land of temples. The kind of temples that people usually travel to see are either carved in marble, gilded in gold or have gigantic idols that were carved by skilled craftsmen. Not the temples at Masrur. The beauty of the Temple Complex at Masrur lies in its dishevelled appearance. Marvel at these magnificent monolithic temples that were supposedly carved by the 5 Pandavas when they were exiled to the Kangra valley. Visit the Stunning 8th Century Rock-Cut Masrur Temple Complex while staying at a Club Mahindra resort in Himachal Pradesh. It’s one of the best things to do in Dharamshala.
Popularly known as the Himalayan Pyramid, the Temple Complex is an important archaeological site dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries. It is a cluster of 15 temples that have been carved out of a single rock. The first thing you notice on entering the Complex is its reflection in the Masrur Lake, located nearby. This adds an aura of mystique to this place. The shikharas or spires are perched at a height of 2,500 feet above sea level and have intricate patterns as well as figures of gods and goddesses carved onto them.
Fourteen temples of the Complex have been cut from the outside-in, but the central one, which is the most majestic of the lot has been carved from the inside-out. This makes the Masrur Temple Complex a feat of engineering that transcends time. The temples share a stark resemblance with the temples at Cambodia's Angkor Wat, Mumbai's Elephanta Caves and Mahabalipuram.
