Besides beaches and shopping centres, Bangkok has a lot to offer in terms of culture. One such monument dedicated to Thai culture and Buddhism is Wat Arun, a majestic temple that you need to see to believe. If you’re looking to add cultural activities to your list of things to do in Bangkok, add a visit to Wat Arun to your list. It is a must-see when you stay at any of our resorts in Bangkok.

With its imposing spires reaching for the sky, Wat Arun is an instantly recognizable part of the skyline and stands out on the horizon. Built in the mid-1600s, Wat Arun once held the sacred Emerald Buddha before it was moved to the Grand Palace. Wat Arun, or the Temple of the Dawn, is named after Aruna, the God of the Rising Sun. Its exterior glows bright in the early morning sunshine so a visit at dawn is highly recommended.

Brightly coloured pieces of broken porcelain plates adorn the temple’s facade. These are gifts from Chinese merchant ships that once sailed on the Chao Phraya river and carried these dishes as weight. Once in port, these dishes had fulfilled their purpose and were tossed overboard, ultimately being turned into the temple's brilliant exterior.

A well-kept secret at Wat Arun is a terrace about half way up the central spire. The climb is arduous, thanks to the steep stairs, but you will be rewarded with a view of Bangkok like none other. The descent too is tricky, but well worth it.
