Right behind the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, lies the Temple of the reclining or Sleeping Buddha. Known as Wat Pho, it is one of the largest temple complexes in the city of Bangkok. If you are holidaying in Bangkok, a visit to Wat Pho, the Temple of the Sleeping Buddha should definitely feature in the list of top 5 things to do in Bangkok. From the resort at Bangkok, it should not take you a little more than half an hour to get there.

While Wat Pho has many attractions including the best Thai massage, the highlight for most is the reclining or Sleeping Buddha. The reclining Buddha is a major iconographic theme in Buddhist art. It represents the Buddha during his last illness. He is lying on his right side, head resting on his elbow. The statue in Wat Pho is the first statue of the Sleeping Buddha. The statue is magnificent with impressive stats. It is 46 metres long and 15 metres tall. His feet are 5 metres long and beautifully decorated with mother-of-pearl illustrations. Before entering the temple, you can buy a bowl of coins which you can then drop into the 108 bowls that line the length of the walls. It is said that these bring you good luck. Your children will definitely cherish this memory for years to come.

Wat Pho has many other attractions to see. There are 4 chapels that house 394 gilded Buddha images, a number of Buddha statues from different parts of Thailand lined up. All of them are sitting in the lotus position. Wat Pho has some reliable English guides. You may want to engage the services of one.
